"NSW Labor to Boost Springwood Theatre Lighting and Sound"
(By Jonathan Foye  Posted: 12 Mar 2015)

NSW Labor has promised to commit $40,000 to upgrade the lighting and sound system in the new Springwood Theatre, should it win the State election.

Labor candidate for Blue Mountains, Trish Doyle, said that the grant would help Blue Mountains City Council fill a funding hole left by the Abbott Liberal Government.

“This Labor State grant will help make this important Mountains facility a higher quality, state of the art performance space,” Ms Doyle said.  “It was thanks to Federal Labor's $9.5 million that this exciting project was able to be kick-started and I am proud to be able to help put some finishing touches to it if Labor takes office in NSW this month.”

The Article read.

It is well known that the Katoomba theatre community is supportive and happy for all townships that receive any assistance for theatre and live performance in the Blue Mountains.

However one would like to point out that Springwood has already received some $9.5 million towards Live performance facilities.   In fact the total project cost was somewhere in the amount of $15.5m with Blue Mountains Rate payers footing the bill for $6m.  Now as mentioned before no one is against any assistance for theatre and live performance space anywhere in the Blue Mountains.

It is hard to comprehend anyone in the Blue Mountains who would not know the important role Katoomba plays as the premier tourism hotspot in the Blue Mountains.  It draws in some 2.5 million Intrastate Local day visitors (60% from Sydney) and 808,000 International visitors per year.

Allowing the town to develop its own theatre and live performance facilities is an opportunity to good to miss.  As with submissions to council this could happen without any cost to the ratepayers of the Blue Mountains or the council providing new employment opportunities and training for youth throughout the Mountains.

While information provided by the Councils own research, Tourism Australia and other studies show support by ratepayers for enhancing the overall feel of all townships in the Mountains it is understood that Katoomba is the best place to get return for investment.

It is therefore incredible the complete lack of support from successive State Governments and the current Blue Mountains City Council that they refuse to sign off on a project that would help support employment, enhance the look and feel of the central township, develop real genuine Australian plays, with facilities that would cater for all .
